We Tried Glossier Solution and Here’s What Happened

The Beauté Study | The Glossier Solution Review

Glossier has introduced a new product to its line. If you are not familiar with the brand, Glossier was started by Emily Weiss after the success of her online editorial called Into The Gloss. The brand advocates with its product expertise from trying other products on the market as beauty writers and editors. Their latest product is The Solution and here’s what we think about it.

The Glossier Solution

This Glossier Solution was our first product that uses a mixture of acids instead of an infusion of acid. So what is acid or a liquid exfoliant? On the back of some of your products, you may see salicylic acid inside of your pimple fighting skincare. Salicylic acid aids our skin in removing the leftover skin cells and blackheads. It doesn’t work on cystic acne, which is extremely sensitive, painful, and hormonal.

If you have dry/sensitive skin, salicylic acid can be drying and cause some skin irritation. A liquid exfoliant is usually a chemical exfoliant that does not cause a harsh reaction to the skin, unlike some physical exfoliants. Physical exfoliants use a physical property to make it work like brown sugar or this body scrub.

Breakdown on The Ingredients

This solution has three types of acids in their product that are Salicylic aka Beta Hydroxy (BHA) acid, Lactic and Glycolic aka Alpha Hydroxy (AHA) acid and Gluconolactone aka Polyhydroxy (PHA) acid. Each one of these acids is used to break down your dead skin cells. Glossier only tells how much Salicylic acid (0.5% Salicylic acid) is in the Solution. They advertise this product with a 10% blend of acids so, it’s unknown to what measurement of AHA and PHA acids are in the product.

This product also contains Parfum/fragrance, which allows a company to not list those items that are a part of their special scent.  If the product is a chemical, it is supposed to smell but Glossier uses a floral-like scent to cover it.

You would use this product as a replacement for toner after a cleanser. This product would replace an exfoliating toner in your skin routine. After this step, you can add hydrating toner, a serum, and a moisturizer. It is best to use products at night as part of your nighttime routine. You need to wear sunscreen while you wear this product since it causes sun sensitivity.

Our Results

As advertised, Glossier used a clinical trial to claim that 3 out of 4 people had “transformed their skin in four weeks.” So, we put it to the test.

For our first week, our skin enjoyed the new product as it was breaking down the dead skin cells. As an initial response, we did get some whiteheads since it was new to our regime. The product did give a sticky film-feeling on the skin because of the ingredient, glycerin, in it. As our first acid, our skin was going through the purging process. Purging means that your skin will be getting rid of the extra sebum aka ‘oil’ and cleansing inside the pores.

By the third week, our skin reacted negatively to the product. Along with more whiteheads, we received painful red bumps that felt similar to cystic acne on the neck and cheeks. The product made our skin very dry and itchy.

In our final week, we did see a reduction of dark spots and our skin evening out. We also had our skin react with dry, itchy, and very red skin.

We personally do not recommend this product as your first acid product. If you are likely sensitive to fragrance, we also recommend avoiding it for use on your face. Recently, we have used this product as part of our body routine recommendations to not waste any product. It’s great for pre-shave and post-shave on your legs. We find it did live up to our test of transforming our skin but not positivity.

Final Results

This product does transform skin in four weeks but not in a good way if it’s your first acid. My skin broke out more with this product than it did to help me. It did help remove some of my dark spots but added more red, painful spots to the collection. Also, the fragrance smells good but that may be part of the problem since my skin is sensitive to fragrances.

I give props for their first acid but, this one is not for me. It doesn’t live up to its claims for transforming in four weeks. The only plus I would give would be the packaging since it’s really cute to look at. That’s probably why this product was hyped up more than ever.
