Sillage

Description

Sillage refers to the trail or aura of fragrance left behind by a person wearing perfume. It represents the degree to which a scent lingers in the air and how far its aroma spreads.

Definition

A fragrance with good sillage has a noticeable and lasting presence in the surrounding environment, allowing others to catch whiffs of the scent even at a distance. The term is often used to describe the projection and diffusion of fragrance on the wearer.

How to Build Sillage

To build a sillage of scent, you must go through a series of short steps to advance your fragrance.

  1. Choose an Eau de Parfum or Parfum: For its higher concentration, this value of the sillage will be stronger as the aromatic compounds increase inside the bottle.
  2. Apply on Fresh, Moisturized Skin: Apply fragrance on skin that is freshly washed, dried, and moisturized with an unscented product. Fragrances bond better to the skin with an unscented lotion, oil or balm.
  3. Apply to Pulse Points: Pulse points radiate heat from your body. Apply to these areas to heat up your fragrance to increase the sillage.
  4. Layer your Fragrance: Layering increases your likelihood of having more sillage from your body. Strategically layer scents that match similar fragrance profiles and fragrance families.
  5. Know your Fragrance Note Profile: Your body knows what scents it will increase with sillage more than others. Carefully keep track of which scents remain strong on you alongside what top notes, heart notes, and base notes are in the scent to encourage a strong sillage profile.
